Europe's FilCom leader sails Marco Polo to London's Shaw Theatre
The allure of its bewitching music and lyrics written by Fil-Belgian composer Roger Saldo Chua, plus a collection of international cast members including Filipinos FAMAS awardee actor Chinggoy Alonzo (Marco Polo's father) and actress Pinky Marquez (Empress Wu) - coincidentally in the course of the 70th anniversary of British-Philippine diplomatic relations - it is not any wonder why the executive producer of the new musical Marco Polo: An Untold Love Story, Gene Alcantara, could not resist to deliver this project onto the mainstream audience in the UK. "It was quite exciting because it was a first of its kind, and in many ways, that an all Filipino production team in the field of west end musical was launched in the general public in London", he confessed.
Gene Alcantara, also the European Network of Filipinos in Diaspora (ENFiD Europe) chairperson, used the term genius to describe his artistic director, Roger, for creating the script and story, especially considering the pressure of preparation and execution. Roger was blessed with a source of strength from his wife Mary and children Dominique and Michael. He laid bare his soul in completing his showpiece, which can be perceived through the evocative love song entitled "I Choose You", together with over 20 original compositions. "This is an East-West love story that reminds us all, regardless of race and origin, to embrace our common humanity", he declared.
Set at the beguiling backdrop of the Shaw Theatre stage in north west London, the tale catalogues the voyage of Marco Polo, played by Lawrence Olsworth-Peter, from Venice to Central Asia and his encounter with Princess Kogajin, a role taken by Stephanie Reese, the daughter of the Great Khan. Venetian Marco Polo spared no effort between the trap of power and a pursuit for true love during the tumultuous thirteenth century. Falling in love with a royal princess despite a mere merchant status will only invite strong oppositions from the elite. Will his perseverance be enough to warrant Kogajin? The story will be revealed...coupled with a twist.
Power, destiny and true love makes a cogent fascination that alone captures the imagination of many. Do not miss the adventure, book your passage now!
